Patterson Consulting is Closing

Patterson Consulting, LLC of Tennessee is in the process of closing and all operations will cease effective March 1, 2022. Please refer to our company page or FAQ for details.

Thank You!

Patterson Consulting was originally founded in 2001 by Boyd Patterson as Patterson Consulting Services. Our primary focus was to provide products and services for functional test automation and lead the way with our flagship product, Test Design Studio, that filled the functionality gap for WinRunner and QuickTest Professional users. Over the years, it was a joy to help our customers achieve more from their test automation efforts by providing the advancing tooling needed to support enterprise-scale automation efforts.

Important Checklist for Test Design Studio Users!

All customers who wish to continue using Test Design Studio after the close of operations should complete the following steps!
  1. Download and backup installers - Download and maintain a backup copy of all software installers. Seat license holders only need to download Test Design Studio. Concurrent license holders will also need to download Concurrent License Server.
  2. Activate licenses or request activation-free license - All licenses ever issued by our company require activation. Our online activation servers will be going offline on or before March 1, 2022. In the event our online servers are not fully operational until the close of the company, manual activation will also be an option until March 1, 2022. After March 1, 2022, no license can be activated.
    • Customers with active maintenance - Customers with an active maintenance agreement should contact us for a new license that will not require activation going forward.
    • Customers without active maintenance - Customers without an active maintenance agreement should plan ahead by installing and activating their license before the company closes. A virtual machine may be the most stable option to ensure continuity of operation since some changes in a machine's configuration may trigger a license to require reactivation even after initial activation. If you believe you need an activation-free license, see the FAQ below for details about how to re-establish maintenance to acquire an activation-free license.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why are you closing?

Our company was started because industry-leading tools like WinRunner and QuickTest Professional lacked the advanced functionality common to other software developers. Our flagship product, Test Design Studio, helped test automation engineers enjoy the same benefits of first-class software developers. Thankfully for the test automation community, the world has moved on and many automation solutions exist today that are powered by modern programming languages with proper tooling support. As companies left QuickTest and Unified Functional Testing for better solutions, they no longer needed the support of Test Design Studio.

When are you closing?

All operations and support will officially end on March 1, 2022. Patterson Consulting, LLC of Tennessee may close as a legal entity prior to March 1, 2022, but this will not affect ongoing support through the announced date of closure.

Can I still use my license?

Yes! All licenses sold have been perpetual licenses, so you can continue to use the software as long as it functions within your environment. Since licenses require activation on new systems or when a change in system hardware is detected, though, customers with an active maintenance agreement should request an activation-free license for use after the company closes.

Can I still use my license even if my maintenance expired?

Yes, but you need to plan ahead! All licenses sold have been perpetual licenses and the license itself does not require ongoing maintenance, but licenses have to be activated and those systems will not be available after March 1, 2022. By planning ahead and activating the license on a machine that you expect to be available long-term, such as a virtual machine, you will continue to be able to access the software as long as that machine is available. Please note that an activated license may require re-activation if it detects a change in the system hardware, so a virtual machine likely provides the best long-term option.

How do I activate a license on or before March 1, 2022?

The steps to activate a license have not changed. Our online server is available for immediate activation to users with internet access. If internet access is unavailable or our activation servers are offline, you can contact us to manually activate the license.

How do I activate a license after March 1, 2022?

A license cannot be activated online or manually after March 1, 2022. Customers with an active maintenance agreement should contact us for an updated license that does not require activation. Customers without an active maintenance agreement should plan ahead by activating their license on or before March 1, 2022 or re-establish their maintenance agreement to acquire an activation-free license.

Can I get an activation-free license without an active maintenance agreement?

Yes, but companies will first need to re-establish their maintenance agreement first. To re-establish maintenance, we will calculate the monthly cost of maintenance for the number of licenses owned when maintenance expired and multiple that amount by the number of full months between the date maintenance lapsed and the date of closure. For example, if maintenance for 10 seat licenses expired July 15, 2020, there would be 19 full months covering August 2020 through March 2021. 10 seat licenses have an annual maintenance cost of $295/license or $2950/year for all 10 licenses. At a monthly rate of $245.83 over 19 months, the cost to re-establish maintenance and be eligible for activation-free licenses would be $4,670.77.

Do I need to renew my maintenance agreement if it expires on or before March 1, 2022?

It depends. Any customers whose maintenance agreement was active at the time of the closure announcement will be eligible for an activation-free license to continue using the software as long as possible, but no additional support will be available after maintenance expires. Those who wish to continue to receive full support until the company closes can renew at a reduced rate based on the number of months between the date of expiration and the date of company closure.

Will Test Design Studio be made available from another company?

No. We have no current plans to sell the rights to the software and do not expect that to change.

Can we acquire the source code to Test Design Studio to support ourselves going forward?

Yes. Any company interested in purchasing the rights to use Test Design Studio's source code for their own use should contact us for additional information.

Can I buy more licenses before the company closes?

Yes, but even new licenses will not be supported after March 1, 2022. Otherwise you can continue to use the licenses as long as possible. Any new licenses sold will not require activation.
